Finland lifts its COVID-related entry ban
Published on: 01 July 2022

All restrictions on travel to and from Finland due to COVID-19 have been lifted

Finland removed all health measures at its borders on Thursday 30 June 2022, two and a half years after the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in the country.

From that date on, international travelers do not need to show COVID-19 vaccination certificates, COVID-19 recovery certificates, or COVID-19 tests with negative results in order to enter Finland.

This means that COVID-19 travel restrictions on both external and internal border traffic have been removed now, and pre-pandemic practices have been reinstalled at border checks.

Additionally, the EU Digital COVID Certificate will no longer be necessary when entering the country, attending events, or going to bars and restaurants. The EU Digital COVID Certificate contains information on COVID-19 vaccinations, negative test results and/or recovery from COVID-19 —something that, as stated above, is no longer required in the country.

International travelers from countries outside of the European Union or the Schengen Area will still need to present normal travel documents, such as a passport or a visa, depending on the case.

The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare has also removed the general recommendation on the use of face masks, except for people who have been exposed to COVID-19, people who experience respiratory symptoms, or people who suspect that they have an active COVID-19 infection and are waiting for the results of a diagnostic test. But in general, as it reads on the Finnish government’s official website, everyone can still wear a mask at their own discretion.

The removal of Finland’s COVID-19 travel and entry restrictions comes in the middle of a reopening of borders taking place in all the European Union. Finland is the last country in the Nordic region that lifts COVID-19 travel and entry restrictions. Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark had already done it, as well as other neighboring countries such as Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

According to the EU’s website Re-Open EU, most countries in the European Union have lifted their COVID-related travel and entry restrictions. Currently, France, Spain, the Netherlands, and Malta still require proof of vaccination, proof of recovery from COVID-19, or a COVID-19 test with a negative result in order to allow international travelers into their territories. Additionally, France requires the presentation of the European Digital Passenger Locator Form to all passengers arriving in the country by air.
