German Foreign Affairs Minister praises Spain’s reopening

German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Heiko Maas, has praised the “quick and decisive actions” of the Spanish government and the “discipline and solidarity” shown by the Spanish people, stating that it is because of both that travel within Europe is possible once more.

During a press conference with the Spanish foreign Minister on Tuesday, Maas recognized that Spain had been “hit hard” by the coronavirus. This follows a meeting between Maas and his Spanish counterpart, Arancha González Laya, in Valencia after the opening of Spain’s borders to EU tourism on 21 June.

Maas also said that the return of safe tourism in Europe would require coordination and cooperation, and noted that he had asked González for Spanish support in this regard.

Maas stated during the press conference that he felt optimistic that the measures of the Spanish government would be a good base for safe tourism, adding that “German tourists should be responsible and follow the rules.”

During the press conference, González and Maas urged tourists to behave responsibly to ensure the infection rates do not rise to unacceptable levels.

It is worth mentioning here that numerous outbreaks have been reported in the days since Spain opened its borders in which González warned that some freedom of movement might have to be reversed if cases of COVID-19 reach 50 a week, per 100,000 inhabitants.

The Spanish minister said that we have to live with the virus and minimize the impact for tourists and residents, noting that outbreaks are inevitable and will continue until treatment or a vaccine is available.

Maas confirmed that there had been a discussion regarding the point at which the governments would deem it necessary to intervene, but stressed that every effort would be made to avoid such action.
