Germany classifies Austria as a Corona high-risk area
Published on: 18 January 2022

Last Sunday, the German government included Austria to its list of high-risk travel destinations, bringing the total to nine of Germany’s neighbours.

The list previously included the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Denmark. However, Austria was removed off the list in December.

As the omicron variant spreads, EU countries are reporting unprecedented levels of illness. Germany has labeled over 140 of the world’s approximately 200 countries as high-risk.

A rise in reported cases

Germany’s seven-day incidence of new cases has reached a new high, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for disease control on Sunday.

On Sunday, there were 515.7 new infections per 100,000 individuals per week, the first time the figure has surpassed 500 in the country.

In fact, a day before, the figure was 497.1, and a week ago, it was 362.7.

In the previous 24 hours, German health officials registered 52,504 illnesses, with 47 fatalities. A week prior, a daily total of 36,552 was reported.

Isolation obligations

Anyone entering the border who has not been vaccinated or who has recently been infected must be quarantined for ten days. If they submit a negative test, the isolation duration might be reduced.

Nonetheless, German officials have stated that travellers who can demonstrate that they have been completely vaccinated with one of the vaccinations recognized in Germany will be exempt from the quarantine obligation.

Those who have a recovery certificate indicating that they have recovered from the virus within the previous six months can also finish their isolation early.
