UK travellers to Spain will not need to quarantine

Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya has confirmed on June 20 that UK visitors to the country will not need to undergo a two-week coronavirus quarantine.

In a tweet, she said that Spain’s borders would open without quarantine measures from June 21. This applied to both Flag of European Union and Schengen countries. However, visitors can expect safety checks at the border, and travellers are urged to follow the country’s health recommendations strictly.

The reopening of Spain’s borders intends to kickstart the country’s economy and tourist industry. According to the Spanish airport operator AENA, over 100 flights from other Schengen countries have already arrived in the country since the national state of emergency was ended on Sunday.

The lockdown in the country totalled three months. For the first time since March 14, Spain’s 47-million residents are allowed to travel throughout the country again freely and may visit friends and family.

Nevertheless, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has urged both residents and travellers to continue exercising maximum public health precautions. He said the virus is still a growing concern around the world, despite the decline in cases in Europe. He warned that a second wave was always a possibility, and urged locals and visitors to do whatever was necessary to avoid a resurgence.

This follows news that free movement between other members of the Schengen states is in the process of being urgently reinstated as well. On June 19, MEPs voted for a resolution to restore free travel and promote economic recovery in the European Union. The European Union has also called for Schengen visa operations to urgently resume, recommending that third-country nationals should be permitted to enter the EU from July 1.
